THE CHANGING FACE OF DISTRIBUTION

A Changing Environment: The old saying “the only constant is change” and speed of change to us old baby boomers has never been greater than now. Don’t get caught waiting for this trend of rising agility within the marketplace to end, the pace of change will continue to increase.

As an OEM with sales in over fifteen global markets around the world, we at Magswitch know it’s not enough to have great products today. You need to be developing the next generation of products for tomorrow, and for distribution and dealers it’s no different.

The challenge is in how we adopt a route to market that covers multiple global markets with a technology that is disruptive, needs to be sold top down in Robotics and requires demonstrated sales techniques in welding, lifting and fabrication markets.

The rapid changes in manufacturing today will require similar variations in how we sell and deliver products to end users tomorrow. Social media, YouTube, blogs and an overall tech-savvy generation are changing what and how we do business. There is much to be learned from retail consumer delivery models in how industrial business is starting to be done.

At Magswitch we have a customer direct strategy, which is not as it sounds. We are not setting out to bypass distribution. Magswitch direct sets out to create direct communication links to our end users in the industry. The Magswitch model sees distributors partnering with Magswitch to create quality relationships with our major dealers and in turn with their customers, especially large OEMs and global organizations.

Distributors who do not partner with OEMs to drive these strategies in dealer networks will retreat into the domain of logistics and freight, good luck in that commodity market. Distributors who do not develop the capability to effectively sell new technology to their markets will be bypassed by the rising tides of the internet. These skill sets are largely developed through technology, and need not be labor intensive. As foreign supply chains develop expertise in selling factory direct through Amazon and Alibaba, and large Industrial suppliers bypass supply chains and buy direct from the overseas OEMs, dealers in particular will have to reinvent their market strategies and become experts in new technology and solutions rather than commodity brokers.

The two fundamental motivators for this change are rapid technology development and the accessibility of information. We used to rely on trade shows and industry magazines. Today its expert newsletters every morning focused on narrow channels curtailed to our direct areas of need that often result in customers being better informed than dealers. They may know pricing, delivery, lead times and specifications before dealer staff are even aware of the products.

What else is influencing the rate of change within the industry? If you don’t understand the psychology of “millennials”, it’s time for a lesson. These are baby boomer kids, quietly sitting in the corner working on their school assignment typing away on the family computer while an instant messenger runs in the background, YouTube videos streaming and music playing into their ear phones. These kids grew up multi-tasking and living their lives vicariously through an internet that delivered new experiences and more information to its users than the methods available to previous generations.

I recently attended a conference for high-tech distributors where it was estimated that 60% of purchasing decision research is being done by millennials. These are the guys and gals who know what they want before turning to traditional supply channels to validate their research. If you get that call, you had better be prepared to drop the pitch strategy and give good technical advice. If you are successful in this, prepare to communicate via email or increasingly by text message. If you did not justify your position in the food chain, they will be adding “buy now” to the google search engine listing for that product you have on your shelf and it will likely be delivered by a catalogue house such as Amazon or Alibaba.

The one saving grace in all of this for the progressive among us will be the ability to deliver the latest technology with an expert message to your customers in a manner that makes you valuable to the customer. If not, then let’s finish with another old saying “like dinosaurs in the tar pit.”

-David Morton, CEO Magswitch Technology Worldwide

Hot Forming

In a recent interview with President of Magswitch Automation Sales, Cengiz Kizilkan, “Innovation in Automation” uncovered some fascinating improvements in high-temperature press lines that are sweeping across the automotive industry. As global OEMs and tier one suppliers race to introduce the new high tensile steel process to satisfy the increasing demand, they are finding that not all global suppliers have kept pace with the new technology demands for handling ultra-high strength steel parts (majority are using Boron 22MnB5) after the hot forming process. Magswitch technology is leading the way with high-temperature magnetic Magswitch grippers, featuring a combination of their numerous proprietary Magswitch Technology into the handling solution.

Kizilkan said that Magswitch has responded to a major OEM request. “During the joint development of our automation R&D center in Ingolstadt with a major OEM’s body-in-white innovation center for a solution of innovative and highly flexible end-effectors for handling of multiple body-side inner and outer assemblies, our technology was shared to other groups within their organization. The team of their press shop has approached our R&D team to introduce them problems they had and were not able to solve 100% with solutions from their current supplier base. During a site visit we were introduced the first time to the process of hot forming and the difficulties they had in single part quality as well as downtime issues caused by non-reliable clamping solutions on the robot end of arm tools.”

Beside the process driven temperature control during the forming process, the major challenge in the handling operation is to unload the parts at a temperature range between 200°C and up to 400°C from the hot forming press. “Using power clamps on the flanges of the part for the handling operation is not reliable, because parts can vary in location caused by the opening of the press die and the clamps would not even touch the parts,” said Kizilkan. “Using suction cups is possible, but increasing the running costs dramatically! Beside the continues air consumption (the most expensive medium in manufacturing is compressed air), the abrasion of the suction cups caused by the high temperature as well as the rough surface of the part is requiring an exchange of them up to three times per shift! Both methods were considered as major red flag situations.”

Having a full understanding of the challenges as well as the full requirements, the global R&D team has started their investigations: “Magswitch had been conducting ongoing R&D in high temperature theoretical applications, but now the first time we had full process requirements,” said Kizilkan. What followed was a measure of how small companies driven by urgency can open the door to a major OEM opportunity: “We knew we had a very narrow window of opportunity. Our R&D division in Colorado focused their research data into a completely new tool able to deliver from white board to installation on customer site in just two weeks!” Kizilkan explained that as an OEM manufacturer, dealing direct with the end-user cut response time considerably.

Somewhat amazingly the prototype tools, untested by Magswitch, went straight onto the production line. They completed the first shift without an issue, thermal images allowed Magswitch engineers to target the landing location; time on and off the part was also an important consideration. “We were able to use sophisticated modelling to show heat sink rise that ensured we would remain within the tolerance of tools heat range,” said Kizilkan. “That said we held our breath for the first day, knowing that global acting suppliers had failed at a maximum of 3,000 cycles, but a success would open the door to not only a major new OEM for the technology, but an entire industry. On the other side, failure may ensure the door closed firmly.” Kizilkan went on to say that 250 days later the tools were still running and achieved designated success. That was late last year, today the prototype tools are still online and has achieved already a cycle count of more than 350,000 cycles. We are now rolling out the new tools to all the OEM facilities.

As a veteran in the integration industry, Kizilkan understands the frustration of slow moving global suppliers. “We are committed to a culture of innovation and urgency. Our CEO is personally involved in all R&D activities and spends months each year visiting OEM and tier one suppliers worldwide to ensure Magswitch is focused on meeting and in majority of the cases even exceed the demands and expectations of innovation in automotive and industrial automation.

The Magswitch Integrated Technology GMBH President explained his vision for the launch of the Magnetic gripper technology as a true platform in the automotive assembly process. “In 2016 we will launch an all-electric actuated gripper, designed from the ground up around our proprietary magnetic switchable technology. For us this is a dream we want to support ISO 500001 certificated companies towards zero air, onboard predictive diagnostics, tools that talk to the OEM, sophisticated sensors to address issues in the industry with part present, double sheet picking and many other issues in the manufacturing processes. Whilst the larger established companies like Schmalz, Schunk and a myriad of gripper manufacturers struggle to commit to the future, Magswitch is delivering. The new platform has the potential to reduce future assembly plants by 25%, energy consumption by up to 95% on line, with guaranteed cycle life of four million cycles.” The tools will outlast the lifetime of the production lines and provide predictive and empirical data on performance, driving down time reduction and providing real time data to add value to our ongoing R&D programs, here in Ingolstadt and in the US.

Looking at the many test robots on the floor of the Magswitch Ingolstadt facility, Kizilkan avoided discussion on the flexible tooling that was being tested, multiple body side with one flexible EOAT. “For now, high-temperature press line and laser cutting facilities are our focus. Perhaps we talk about flexible tooling early next year…..it is also an exciting project and one as usual Magswitch is well ahead of competitors in this area.”

Revelations on Table Saw Set-up & Safety

It recently came to the attention of Magswitch Technology that a new DVD called “Revelations on Table Saw Set-up & Safety”, a Passion for Wood production featuring Canadian master craftsman, Hendrik Varju, features some of our products. We spoke to Varju about his inclusion of our products in his video production and it turns out that he has been favouring our featherboards ever since he discovered them at IWF 2006. Varju not only builds fine furniture and teaches his craft in his own workshop, but he is also a well known writer for magazines such as the very noteworthy “Fine Woodworking” magazine. We were thrilled to find out that Varju has been such a fan of our products and has been recommending them to his students since 2006.
After reviewing a copy of Varju’s most recent production, “Revelations on Table Saw Set-up & Safety”, we were impressed with the thoroughness and level of detail in this production. The video is nearly ten hours long spread over a 5-DVD boxed set and the emphasis on safety is evident throughout. We’ve never seen any table saw video with this level of mastery. It is clear why Varju uses the trademarked name “Private Woodworking Instruction in a Box” on the front of his productions, as this is not just any DVD. It is a full, detailed course on how to get the best out of your table saw while respecting safety rules at the same time. And to see some of our Magswitch products being used by such a demanding craftsman is absolutely thrilling to our company.

This is a DVD we highly recommend to our customers who need to learn more about how to set up and use their table saws to their full potential. To read more about Varju’s videos, see http://www.passionforwood.com/dvds.htm. This is his second production following his first video called “Jointer and Planer Secrets”.
